  24.   detailed in the Paradox 4.0 User's Guide Chapter 7.

  27.   This document illustrates how to print envelopes on an HP
  28.   LaserJet Series II or compatible printer.

  31.   It is often desirable to print envelopes with addresses that are
  32.   stored in a database.  This can be accomplished by using the
  33.   Paradox Report feature.
  34.  
  35.   The first step is to create the report.  Choose Report | Design |
  36.   <Table Name>, then choose the report number, name the report, and
  37.   choose Free-form.  This will give you a Standard Free-form report
  38.   layout that looks something like this:

  85.         60 characters for formatting purposes.

  87.   Next, remove all lines in the report outside of the Form Area
  88.   (the area between the two FORM lines).  To do this, place the
  89.   cursor at the far left of the line and press Ctrl+Y.  Then, press
  90.   Ctrl+V to place a vertical ruler in the report.  At this point

  109.   Next measure the size of the envelope you are using.  Now
  110.   multiply the width by ten to get the width setting for the
  111.   report, and multiply the length by six and round down to get the
  112.   page length of the report.

  114.   Note: If you are going to use 8 lines per inch or a compressed
  115.         font for the envelopes, see the appendix at the end of the
  116.         paper).  For a 9 1/2" by 4 1/4"  envelope the width will be
  117.         95 and the length will be 24.  To set this, choose Setting
  118.         | PageLayout | Length and set the length to 24 and press
  119.         Enter.  Then choose Setting | PageLayout | Width and set
  120.         the width to 95 and press Enter.

  122.   Next, you need to enter a setup string for the report.  This
  123.   example illustrates how to print Commercial 10 envelopes, and
  124.   manually feed them.  If you are using an envelope tray or feeder,
  125.   or a different sized envelope, see the Appendix at the end of
  126.   this document.  To enter the setup string choose Settings | Setup

  151.   \027E\027&l3h81a1O as the Setup string and \027E as the Reset
  152.   string.

  154.   Note: Paradox versions 3.5 and earlier do not have reset strings.
  155.         You will need to place a calculated field with "\027E" on a
  156.         blank line in the report footer.  Make sure you include the
  157.         quotes.
  158.  
  159.   Now you are ready to create the layout of your envelope.  There
  160.   are several ways to accomplish this, but there are a few rules
  161.   you need to follow.
  162.  
  163.       -  Make sure that the number of lines between the two FORM
  164.          lines does not exceed the number of lines you calculated
  165.          for the report length (24 in this example).
  166.  
  167.       -  Do not add any lines outside of the FORM band, and stick
  168.          to a single page width.  To determine how many Page Widths
  169.          are currently set, you will need to look at the Page Width
  170.          indicator on your screen.  In version 4.0, the indicator
  171.          is in the lower left corner of your report window, and is
  172.          given as two numbers with a colon ":" between them.  The
  173.          first number is the current Page Width and the second
  174.          number is the total Page Widths.  In versions of Paradox
  175.          prior to Paradox 4.0, the indicator appears as a fraction
  176.          in the upper right corner of your screen.  The top number
  177.          indicates your current Page Width, while the bottom number
  178.          gives you the total Page Widths.  You always want the
  179.          current Page Width to be 1, and the total Page Widths to
  180.          equal 1.

  182.       -  Include a blank line at the bottom of the FORM band and
  183.          place the word PAGEBREAK on the far left side of this
  184.          line.

  186.       -  In designing the layout, you will probably want to place a
  187.          few blank lines at the top of the FORM band, and position
  188.          the address over to the right in the FORM band to center
  189.          the Address on the envelope.

  236.   Now you are ready to print!
  237.  
  238.   It is usually best to print a couple of test pages first to make
  239.   sure that the address is positioned in the correct location on
  240.   the envelope.  If it isn't, you can adjust the number of lines
  241.   above the address to compensate, or move the fields left or right
  242.   to center the address on the envelope.  To print only a few
  243.   envelopes from your database, you can choose Reports |
  244.   RangeOutput, type in the name of your table, select the Report
  245.   number, choose Printer, type in the Beginning page number, press
  246.   Enter, and type in the Ending page number and press Enter.  You
  247.   can also use a query to select particular records that you want
  248.   to print.  For information on this technique, refer to Technical
  249.   Information Sheet number 685.

  292.        A: You can adjust the setup string for that.  The standard

  305.        A: First you adjust the setup string.  The standard setup
  306.           string looks like this: \027E\027&l3h81a1O.  You can add
  307.           \027&l8D to the end of the string for 8 lines per inch,
  308.           and \027(s16.66H for compressed print.  Both of these
  309.           strings can be used at the same time.  Second, you will
  310.           need to adjust the length and width of the report.

  312.           To determine the length of the report, multiply the
  313.           length of the envelope in inches by 8 (for 8 lines per
  314.           inch).  Change the report length by choosing Setting |
  315.           PageLayout | Length, type in the value that you
  316.           calculated for the length, and press Enter.

  318.           For compressed print multiply the width of the envelope
  319.           in inches by 16.66 and round the value to get the report
  320.           width.  Change the report width by choosing Setting |
  321.           PageLayout | Width, type in the value that you calculated

  350.        A: Adjust the setup string.  The standard setup string looks
  351.           like this for standard 9 1/2" by 4 1/4" Commercial 10
  352.           envelopes:

  361.   4)   Q: When I print out the envelopes, the address creeps down
  362.           the envelope on each successive record, or I get multiple
  363.           addresses on each envelope.

  365.        A: From the Main menu choose Report | SetPrinter | Override
  366.           | EndOfPage and set it to FormFeed.  Next make sure that
  367.           the total number of lines in your form band do not exceed
  368.           the length of the report you calculated.  Finally, make
  369.           sure that you have the word PAGEBREAK on the last line of
  370.           the FORM band on a line by itself, and that it is
  371.           positioned at the left margin of the report
  372.           specification.

  374.   5)   Q: I am getting a blank envelope for the first envelope or
  375.           between each printed envelope.

  377.        A: Make sure that the number of lines in your form band do
  378.           not exceed the number of lines that you have calculated
  379.           for the report length.
